Entrepreneurship is not a 9-5 job. It is an all-consuming passion that requires dedication, hard work, and sacrifice. That makes it tough to balance the demands of running a business and the desire to enjoy the pleasures of travel. However, balancing travel and entrepreneurship is crucial for your health, mental well-being, and the success of your business. I know this all too well as someone who embraced the digital nomad lifestyle. Last year I lived abroad in Europe for several months and spent time traveling across France, Monaco, Switzerland, and Italy. If you’re an entrepreneur looking to take a well-earned break or are interested in becoming a digital nomad, here are several tips that can help you balance travel and entrepreneurship.

How to Balance Travel and Entrepreneurship

Plan Your Itinerary in Advance

One of the biggest obstacles for entrepreneurs when it comes to taking time off is letting go of their business. One way to ease this is to plan your vacation or trip in advance. Make reservations ahead of time, so you’re not distracted by last-minute decisions. This will help take away some of the natural stress while traveling, especially if you’re going out of the country. You can schedule strategic meetings and set aside time to check emails or handle some urgent business tasks. This way, you can avoid the stress of having unfinished business tasks clouding your mind throughout your vacation. If you’re hoping to make this a longer-term arrangement, balancing travel and entrepreneurship is doable but can be more challenging.

Create a Workable Schedule

Just because you’re away from your business doesn’t mean you can ignore it completely. You can build a schedule that allows you to work for a few hours a day while still having time to enjoy the sights of your travel destination. Designate specific times during the day to check your emails and handle important tasks. This way, you can focus on your business without ruining the joy of travel.

When I was living in Paris, my main client was in the Pacific timezone, which meant I didn’t need to start working until 6 pm Paris time. This worked out really well because I could spend my days exploring and start working in the evening. Although sometimes inspiration and productivity would strike late at night, I would end up going to sleep late and sleeping in late, making my days to explore shorter. In hindsight, I would’ve been a little more strict with myself on working and sleeping hours to really optimize my time there.

Automate Business Tasks

Consider using automation tools like social media schedulers and email autoresponders to make sure your business activities don’t take too much time away from your travels. You can program some of your routine business tasks to go on even when you’re offline. You can also collaborate with remote freelancers or service providers to handle certain business tasks while you’re away. In other words, use technology to your advantage to allow your business to run without you running it 24/7.

Take Care of Yourself

It’s easy to get caught up in all the excitement of travel and forget to take care of yourself. However, it’s incredibly important to get enough sleep, exercise, nutrition, and self-care while you’re away. You’ll be refreshed and ready to take on both new challenges from adventure and daily business routines. Try doing some meditation to help clear your mind, reduce stress, and improve your focus.

Living in Paris, it was easy to eat all the meats, cheeses, and baguettes, but I found myself craving fruits, and vegetables, and comfort dishes from home. Taking a trip to the local market to stock up on grocery staples became an important part of my routine. Daily walks around my neighborhood helped me take care of myself. And regularly painting my nails brought me comfort in being away from home and my usual routine.

Make the Most Out of the Adventure

When all is said and done, you only get to spend time in some destinations once. So, it’s important to make the most out of it. Take the time to explore different places, try new foods, and learn about the local culture. Use this opportunity to come up with new ideas that can help inspire and motivate you in your business once you’re back home.

Final Thoughts

Running a business as an entrepreneur is a challenging but rewarding journey. Balancing your passion for work with your desire to travel and explore is necessary for your overall well-being because, let’s face it, you’re only human. I’ve learned a lot about balancing travel and entrepreneurship over the last couple of years. Since I’ve returned from Europe, frequent traveling has only continued. Since I still work remotely, I have the opportunity to work from anywhere. And I take advantage of it. This year I’ve traveled 5 out of 6 months so far.

Whether it’s to Nashville, Denver, or San Diego, when I travel, I remember to plan ahead, create a workable schedule, automate my routine tasks, and take care of myself. But most of all, I don’t forget to enjoy all the adventure that comes with being a business owner. I hope these tips will help you balance your business life and your passion for adventure, ensuring that your business and your mental health thrive in tandem. Happy traveling!
